The Roles of Fairy Tales

I wanted to first start this off by talking about the specific roles of the characters in fairy tales, so when brought up within new contexts, they will be very apparent.

I would suggest the reading BRIAR ROSE
which was an inspiration for this modern adaptation of the look into fairy tales.

The Princess - She is historically the princess is always in trouble, she relies on the hero for comfort and saving.

The Hero - He is on a great great question battling demons and witches to get to the castle and save his maiden fair

The Witch - She is always a hassle, she tries poisoning the princess and deceiving the hero, whether it means so she can have him herself or once he finds out who she is, making sure he pays.

these roles are always the same to a certain degree, they are reinforced with a romantic overtone saturating the realities behind these roles. That men always want to quest (which is in reality more important than even getting the girl), women are helpless in need of a man to save them, and that there is a key misunderstood, but evil force tearing them apart. The roles are sometimes tweaked for different time periods, but the force driving all of these are gender ideologies.

Whether or not these roles are reversed (like they may be in modern culture) they tell the same stories. The hope is to investigate and expose in modern terms how these stories are being told and the journey of finding new stories.
